Tinea Capitis Profunda

Dermatophyte infection of the scalp, usually caused by T. verrucosum or T. mentagrophytes. It is characterized by one or more large, tender boggy masses with erythema, pustules, crusting, and alopecia. Such a mass is called a kerion. Lymphadenopathy is frequent. Such infections may result in scarring and permanent alopecia.
