Chronic fungal infection of the skin and subcutaneous tissues caused by several species of Phialophora or Cladisporium, all of which are common inhabitants of soil and wood. Infection usually results from trauma such as a puncture from a splinter of wood. It is characterized by scaly papules, most often on the feet, legs, arms and neck, which enlarge to form verrucous plaques. Eventually large hyperkeratotic masses are formed. The lesions are usually painless unless secondary infection causes itching and pain.
