Battered Child

Physical abuse is an injury caused to a child by a carer producing bruises, burns, scalds, fractures, ruptures of organs and disruptions of function. Buttocks or hips are the most common site of injury, but often the upper body and head are involved, too. Bruises of different ages are highly suspicious of child abuse in the absence of adequate explanation. However, some conditions may be confused with bruising and fractures due to abuse. Differential diagnoses to physical injury must include bleeding disorders, vitamin K deficiency, and collagen disorders.
