Miniature epidermal inclusion cysts that originate from the pilosebaceous apparatus of vellus hair and appear as tiny pearly papules mainly located on cheeks, chin and forehead. Lesions usually appear and disappear spontaneously during the first month, but they may also occur in older children and young adults. Milia are also seen at the sites of healed bullae in dystrophic epidermolysis bullosa, in porphyria cutanea tarda, bullous lichen planus, and in second degree burns. Milia are seen in 40 to 50 per cent of infants.
