Congenital Rubella Syndrome

Neonatal disease produced by the rubella virus following maternal rubella infection during the first 20 weeks of pregnancy. It is characterized by intrauterine growth retardation, microcephaly, microphthalmia, visceral abnormalities and cutaneous manifestations including petechiae, purpura and ’blueberry muffin’ lesions (areas of extramedullary hematopoiesis). Not all infants exposed in utero acquire the infection, nor do all infected infants manifest disease during the neonatal period.
