Hair Shaft Abnormalities

Structural defects of the hair shaft may be classified into those which are associated with increased fragility, and those which are not. The former present clinically as patchy or diffuse alopecia. Hair shaft abnormalities with increased fragility include monilethrix, pili torti and trichorrhexis nodosa. They are a feature in various syndromes including Menkes’ syndrome and Bjonstad’s syndrome. Hair shaft abnormalities without increased fragility include pili annulati and woolly hair. Other abnormalities of the hair shaft include trichoclasis, trichoptilosis and trichoschisis.
