Recurrent Herpes Simplex

Recurrences appear in previously infected individuals upon reactivation of the persisting herpes virus. Triggering mechanisms include febrile illness, menstruation, emotional disturbances, sunburn, or local trauma. Lesions occur most frequently on the face, but can be situated anywhere on the body. Itching or burning precedes by an hour or two the development of small, closely grouped vesicles on a red base.
